Abstract : Recently, considerable emphasis has been placed on the development of molecular marker technology to be used for a variety of applications including in both basic plant research and plant breeding programs. Various types of techniques are used to estimate genetic diversity such as dominant markers (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), DNA amplification fingerprinting (DAF), Arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction (APPCR), Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP), and co-dominant markers (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), Simple sequence repeats (SSRs), Sequence characterized amplified regions (SCARs), Cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS), Expressed sequence tags (ESTs), Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and sequence tagged sites (STSs). These markers can be used to study the evolutionary relationships among individuals. In this article we attempt to review most of the available DNA markers that can be routinely employed in various aspects of plant genome analysis such as characterization of genetic variability, genome fingerprinting, genome mapping, gene localization, analysis of genome evolution, population genetics, taxonomy, plant breeding, and diagnostics.
