Abstract : The following paper presents an integrated inductive capacitive component via its electric equivalent and examines its suitability to provide reactive power to compensate both lagging as well as a leading phase shift for varying loads in the power system. Explaining the functional concepts of the integrated component shows how its terminal impedance can be adjusted to be both capacitive and inductive. A specially constructed pilot arrangement demonstrates how this component can provide via a specific regulation process the exact capacitive reactive power to compensate the phase shift caused by an induction motor in an elementary one source single phase domestic voltage supply circuit. The same pilot arrangement is further being adjusted to provide exact inductive reactive power to compensate the phase shift of a capacitive load. Calculations and appropriate measurements verify the concept of the dual character of the component. Extended preliminary experimentation to be pursued further indicate at this stage reasonable prospects for the integrated component to regulate the phase shift automatically maintaining thus a constant predetermined desired value.
